What does a car mortgage mean?
A mortgage means that the car can be used as collateral for a loan, often for car loans, leasing or financing.

If the car is mortgaged, the bank or financing company may still have rights to the car. If the loan is not paid, they may, in the worst case, demand that the car be sold to cover the claim.

Can you buy a car with a mortgage?
Yes, but the mortgage must be settled properly before or at the same time as the transaction.
The safest option is to pay the remaining amount directly to the bank or financing company that has a mortgage on the car, and to pay the rest of the purchase price to the seller.
You should never blindly trust that the seller will “fix it later.” Get confirmation of who has a lien on the car, how much is due, and that the lien will be removed after payment.

Does the mortgage accurately reflect the outstanding debt?
Not always. A registered lien shows that there is a mortgage or claim related to the car, but it does not necessarily show the exact outstanding debt as of today.
The loan may be partially paid off, recently discharged, or in the process of being written off. Therefore, actual outstanding debt should always be confirmed directly with the bank or finance company that has the mortgage.
